Description
Newspaper article from Sunday World dated February 15, 1987. A continuation of the Sunday World survey on AIDS, "of which the main findings were published last week." (See item 741; Sunday World Vol. 14 No. 47, dated February 8th, 1987 and entitled "AIDS The First Irish Survey").
Discusses how most Irish people fear AIDS will become an epidemic. "Three out of ten people thought an AIDS epidemic was "very likely" and a further third thought it was "somewhat likely". Displays bar and pie chart graphs on the following survey questions: "Do you know how to catch AIDS?", "How many people with AIDS will die?", "Will AIDS become an epidemic?", and "Who is likely to catch AIDS?" References Mick Quinlan of the Gay Health Action Group in Dublin: "We recommend everyone to use condoms but we cannot endorse the red stripes because its not up to us to do their marketing." Includes a smaller article by Cathy Kelly, entitled "We are a lot wiser" and discusses how "Dr Freedman said the [Sunday World] survey showed that Irish people were very clear on the ways in which you can be infected with the disease." Mentions that "the Government's £1/2 [half] million AIDS education campaign has been shelved until after the election because the Taoiseach doesn't want it to become an election issue." References a "TV and radio blitz" featuring advertising slogans like: "Bang-Bang, you're dead. Casual sex is like Russian roulette." Also mentions a TV commercial, "one of the new breed of straight-talking commercials that aim to hammer home the dangers of AIDS", promoting a top brand of condom. Notes that health authorities in many countries from all around the world "have also been grasping the nettle". Second page entitled "The Doctor's Prescription" appears to be an unrelated article.
